Misinformed Part 2
By David Modderman, B.S., NASM-CPT, ACE- CPT, NESTA-CFNCAb and Butt blaster will help us burn fat.
Unfortunately almost The all of us have fallen for this one. We all have seen these infomercials late at night or on Saturdays. A magic product that promises us results in just 10 minutes a day. Let me save you a lot of money and heart ache these products will not burn fat. The ab blaster will not help us burn the fat off our stomach, and the butt blaster will not burn fat off our behind. If these products worked why is there a new one out every couple of months? The makers of these products know that most are misinformed and will try anything that promises to help us lose fat. Lets take a look at the science behind fat loss.
The idea of spot reduction has been around for decades. Many still believe we can lose fat in one specific area, by doing certain movements and exercises. I am here to tell you WE CAN NOT! We cannot choose the area on our body we want to lose fat and actually burn it off by doing one exercise. For example many try to do hundreds upon hundreds of crunches and sit ups to burn fat off their stomach. Doing twists and side bends will not reshape our obliques or burn away our love handles. The only way to burn fat properly is through our entire body evenly. The best way to do this is through synergy. What is synergy? I will explain this in a future article.
We have a hormone in our body called Glucagon; this hormone is responsible for releasing fat from our body. Glucagon is released from the pancreas and is responsible for releasing fat cells from the body to the muscle to be burned as energy. We cannot choose where we want this fat to be released from nor can we find a magic exercise or piece of equipment to do it for us.
You just need to use the latest Fat Burner, and the newest Magic shake, drink or powder.
Sadly, there is no magic pill or fat burner that will burn fat, if there was don't you think everyone would be using it? Fat burners usually contain some kind of a stimulant like caffeine that will make you feel alert and energized for a short period of time. Just by taking something that claims to be a fat burner you will not burn fat.
We have all seen them advertised the magic celebrity drink that promised to help you lose 5 pounds in 5 days. Yes, you do lose weight, but what are you losing? The scale says you lost weight, when all you're doing is dehydrating your body and losing water weight. There are many meal replacements on the market, some promise you results by just taking the shake or powder. There is no powder or shake out there that will take the place of an actual healthy meal. A liquid meal will never be as helpful as a solid meal for losing body fat, because a liquid meal is broken down much quicker and easier. With a solid meal the body spends more time and energy breaking it down, by doing this a solid meal will have a more positive effect on our metabolism. Many meal replacements contain low quality protein and lots of sugar. A perfect example is "Slim fast". Slim Fast is marketing genius; it's a meal placement marketed to lose weight. With "Slim" and "Fast" in the title this product must be helpful for losing weight right? If you look at the ingredients of Slim fast, it contains skim milk and sugar. How will this help us lose weight? It won't! Sugar actually in scientific studies shows it slows down fat release! So what does this mean? The more sugar we consume the less chance we have of using fat as energy! So slim fast could actually make us fatter! There are some meal replacements out there that aren't all bad, but anything that is pre made or premixed with water has lost quality. I recommend if you use a quality protein powder, just use it for convenience and to add a little extra protein to a busy lifestyle. Protein powder is a food not a supplement in my opinion. I don't promote any supplements; I do however promote a well-balanced nutrition plan. A good nutrition plan where you are not depriving yourself of nutrients whether its carbohydrates, protein, fat or calories.
Taking Supplements will help me reach my goals.
This is one the biggest common mistakes by the misinformed. Most fail to realize the supplement industry is a $50 billion a year industry. These supplement companies are not selling theses pill and potions to help people; they are in it to make money! I'm not saying everyone who makes a supplement is out to make money or that all supplements are worthless, there are a few ok ones out there. But I do believe their marketing is very deceiving. We first have to understand what the word supplement means "in addition to". Most supplement companies use fitness models to sell their product, to make people think if they take this same supplement they will look just like the fitness model. Unfortunately, most fail to realize these models workout 5-6 times a week and eat healthy meals 6-8 times per day. So it takes much more hard work than just taking a supplement to look like these fitness models and bodybuilders.
